Smoking is to be banned for everyone born after 2008

The UK has taken a historic step toward a smoke-free future with a new law targeting future generations. The Tobacco and Vapes Bill, recently approved by Parliament and awaiting royal assent, includes a ground-breaking provision: anyone born on or after January 1, 2009, will be legally barred from ever taking up smoking. This means a future generation will be protected from tobacco addiction from the start.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting described the legislation as a “historic moment for the nation’s health.” He emphasized that this law aims to create a “smoke-free generation,” significantly reducing smoking-related illnesses and deaths in the UK. The bill also grants ministers new powers to regulate tobacco, vaping, and nicotine products, including restrictions on flavors and packaging that often appeal to young people.

The move has garnered widespread praise from health charities and campaign groups. Cancer Research UK’s Chief Executive Michelle Mitchell called it a “historic achievement” that will shield children from the devastating impacts of tobacco addiction and reduce cancers caused by smoking. Similarly, Sarah Sleet from Asthma and Lung UK highlighted that it will protect vulnerable populations, especially around schools and hospitals, from the harmful effects of tobacco.

Although the idea was first floated by the government of Rishi Sunak, it was temporarily shelved before the 2024 election. Labour revived the plan and considered further measures, like banning smoking in outdoor areas such as pub gardens. However, the current legislation marks a significant milestone in tobacco control.

Mr. Streeting affirmed that “children in the UK will be part of the first smoke-free generation,” protecting them from lifelong addiction and health issues. He also emphasized that prevention is better than cure, noting that the law will save lives, ease the burden on the NHS, and promote a healthier Britain. This bold move signals a promising future where generations can grow up free from the shadow of smoking.
